Nandita and Alexa's Weekly Update...

Hello! This is Alexa and Nandita here to talk to you about our AMAZING week, (three days to be exact) here in Mrs.Clayton’s class! First we will be talking to you about Art. On Tuesday, we will be telling you about a speech about Cultural and Global Awareness by Kasym and his friends from E.R.L.A. (Enrichment  Reading Language Arts). Last but not least, we will also be telling you about our Chinese New Year celebration, enjoy! During Art class, we all tried to copy and draw a stamp that someone already designed. What we liked about this project was that some of us (from their stamp) got to copy the language and got to draw the Singapore symbol which is the Merlion. What I (Nandita) thought was very creative was to color in the drawing with watercolor. Later we get to design the paper with the stamp copy on it to make it look like a real stamp by cutting the edge of the paper in a zigzag pattern. Art can be very creative and interesting, like this fascinating project.
On Tuesday, we had a presentation presented to us by Kasym, and his friends from E.R.L.A. It was about Global Awareness. They taught us about other people’s cultures and how not to offend them. I (Alexa) really liked it and thought that it was very helpful. Did you know that in some cultures they only point with their middle finger? Now I have learned that I should always learn about the cultures of that country before I go there. After the presentation, we shared about what we knew about different cultures. I thought that it was interesting to hear what other people’s cultures did and did not do.
On, our last day which was Wednesday, we had a Chinese New Year celebration by all of the Chinese teachers (and some other performers). When we got there we had to take a test about Chinese New Year and what people do for it. When it got to the bomb or fireworks question, everyone said bomb! The first act was the bowl spinning. What it included was one lady, six sticks and six bowls to spin on the sticks. I remember that last year, she was the lady who was also did the flexibility act. While she was spinning the bowls she also did lots of moves with her legs. When the bowls got close to the ground she somehow managed to get them back up over her head. The second act was, a face changing act. It included a man and many faces. Every time he would turn around then turn back around, he would have a different face. When he came up to the audience, he would give high fives, then stop and change faces. Almost to the last was infact, a lion dance. The lions this year were gold. They would jump around and even jump on to each others shoulders! The lions also came in to the audience, like the face changing act. When they did so, everyone would scramble out of their seats and try to pet it. When I tried to pet it, it was all wet and sweaty from all the other hands. For the last act we got to see all the Chinese teachers doing a umbrella dance together which we thought was cool and they did the dance all together at the same time. The last part was when we all sang a Chinese song together, which was Gong Xi Gong Xi.

We thought the week went really well even though it was short. That is the end with our news for Mrs. Clayton’s class. Did you like hearing about our fantabulous week? Even though this week was short we can still have lots of fun! Hope you are eager to read the next wonderful maybe wacky, Weekly Update! Also hope that you guys all have a happy Chinese New Year and enjoy February! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Grammar Girl to the Rescue: Junior

In the United States, last Monday was a holiday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day. People often wonder whether they need to put a comma before the Jr. that follows someone's name.

The official holiday name has no comma, and the AP StylebookThe Chicago Manual of Style, and other style books recommend omitting the comma in Martin Luther King Jr. Day and any name that includes Jr.,Sr., III, and so on.
Grammar Girl's advice is to leave it out.

Mychal and Harrison's Weekly Update...

Hi this is Harrison and Mychal, reporting on Clayton Network™. The week has been full of exciting activities. We will tell you all about our marvelous music class, jumpy Jump-a-thon, fun field trip, smart student council elections, and our tremendous time at a Tibetan Bowl session. We hope you enjoy this weeks Weekly Update. In music on Monday, we played a game called Boom Boom Crash. Boom Boom Crash is a game exactly like Duck Duck Goose. We all sat in a circle and someone walked around the circle and tapped everyones head when Mr.Anderson played a Boom sound on the piano. The main point of this game was that we had to tap someones head on the beat. When Mr. Anderson played a crash on the piano the person whose head got tapped chased after the person who tapped their head. If the tapper who tapped the person on the head ran around the circle twice without getting touched and sit’s down in the circle where the other person was sitting. The other person then becomes the one who has to go around the circle tapping everyone’s heads. We played this game for a long time. I hope everyone else enjoyed this game as much as Mychal and I did.
On Tuesday, we had our Jump-a-thon. The Jump-a-thon is when we all go and jump rope for 30 minutes to raise money for an organization called Tabitha. Tabitha is an organization to help raise money to give to Cambodia. Everyone in 5th grade is trying to raise money. The class that raises the most money gets a pizza party! Everyone had tons of fun jump roping in the morning. Everyone did different activities with their friends. I can’t wait to do more activities like this.
On Wednesday, we went to a museum called Images of Singapore. We learned so much about Singapore’s history. In the morning we split into groups Harrison and I were in the same group! Then we took the bus to the museum.  Once we got their we had a snack and ran around. We went in. First we watched an introduction video about the four winds of Singapore. The four winds of singapore where the Europeans, Malaysian, Chinese and the Indians. One thing I really learned is that singapore is a lot of cultures combined. I thought the best part was learning about the different cultures festivals (such as ThaiPusam and Chinese New Year.). We all had to choose one job to study and tell why we wanted od did not want to have this job. I chose the Indian milk man, because he was helping people and he had milk. Another important job was Sam Sui Woman. The Sam Sui Woman were the people who built shelter and houses for others. I felt this was important because if there were no Sam Sui Woman, nobody would have and home or shelter. We also had to find some primary sources and secondary sources. It was like a scavenger hunt! I can’t wait to do more field trips like this
On Thursday, we had elections for Student Council. We had three of the girls in our class try out to be the class’ Student Council members. We had three outstanding speeches for only two Student Council members. The three girls who tried out where Julia, Alyssa, and Jade. After minutes of voting our winners were … Julia and Alyssa. Congratulations to Julia and Alyssa for being this semesters student council reps!
On Friday, we had an amazing Tibetan bowl session. The Tibetan Bowls are a way of meditation. The Tibetan Bowls make a  very relaxing sound. During the session we spreaded out, layed down, and listened to the Tibetan Bowls being played. I (Mychal) departed my body and just thought some of my favorite things. The Tibetan Bowls were round and looked like they were made of copper. The Tibetan Bowls where very calming. We wish we could have another session.
We hope you enjoyed this week’s Weekly Update. It was such a fun week working together in marvelous music class, jumping at Jump-a-thon, filling out the packet on the field trip, and tremendous Tibetan Bowl session. Don’t forget about the Super Bowl next week. Comment below for who you are going for in the Super Bowl. Thanks for tuning into Clayton Network™.  Tune into next week's Weekly Update.

Grammar Girl Tips: Commas in Dates

Jane wants to know how to use commas with days of the week.

Which is correct?

- Tuesday, January 21, 2014
- Tuesday January 21, 2014
With dates, when you have two words next to each other or two numbers next to each other, you need a comma to separate the two items. So Jane should write, "Tuesday, January 21, 2014"

Luis and Young Seo's Weekly Update

Welcome to Clayton Network™ starring the very famous Young Seo and the super cool Luis. We loved our week because: First, a new kid came to our class, named Alex. Second, Mr. Filice taught us about the 5 things that people need in life, and third we had Science Lab. We hope you enjoy our weekly update! This week, Alex came to Mrs. Clayton’s class! We would like to welcome Alex to our class (clap for Alex please). We were so excited to see and meet Alex. Some of the boys volunteered to create a sign to make Alex feel welcome. Alex moved from Boise, Idaho. So he probably likes likes the University of Idaho Vandals from american football. Idaho is a long way from here! We hope that Alex is enjoying this school, we all know what he felt moving here (nervous). Hopefully that Alex will get used to SAS soon.
In Counseling, we learned about five things you need for life. Those five things are: power, belonging, freedom, survival, and fun. Mr. Filice told us that most adults think that fun is not very important. If you don't have fun then you’ll have more stress. We both agree that without fun we’ll get mad more often. What Mr. Filice means by freedom is that you get to choose we get to choose our own choices. For example, kids don’t get freedom to choose if they want to move, or go on vacation. Survival is eating, sleeping and being safe. We don’t have to worry about those things except maybe sleeping. Power basically means that people notice that you are good at something.  Lastly, belonging means that you have friends and family.
In Science Lab we created elephant toothpaste! Sadly there were no elephants around the science lab. Anyway, we thought this was the coolest experiment so far. When we mixed the mixture of yeast and hydrogen peroxide into the mixture of 45 mL of water and 5 mL of dish soap, it caused a chemical reaction. It made a toothpaste looking substance jumping out of the 1000 mL graduated cylinder. After that we got to touch the elephant toothpaste, it felt very warm, squishy, and foamy.

Thank you for tuning in to Clayton Network™. We both hope that you enjoyed our Weekly Update about our new student Alex, Counseling, and creating elephant toothpaste. We hope you have a wonderful wacky weekend! Tune in next week to hear from the cool Mychal and the awesome Harrison.

Grammar Girl to the Rescue!

"New Year Resolution" or "New Year's Resolution"

New Year's Day is a holiday, so the name is capitalized.

When you make resolutions tied to that holiday, they are called "New Year's resolutions" because "New Year's" is an abbreviated form of the holiday name. If you are writing more generally about your resolutions for the new year or wishing someone well in the new year, "new year" is lowercase because it isn't the name of anything; "new" is just an adjective that modifies "year."

- My New Year's resolution is to be nicer to my sister.

- I'm using the new year as an excuse to make a fresh start.
