I think it might mean that teachers will try their best to teach you something but you will have to try hard to figure out what the teacher is teaching. Another meaning might be that teachers will teach you something and it is your choice to try learn it.
I agree with Young Seo about his meaning. In my words it means that teachers the subjects and the note taking strategies. You have to make a choice to learn it or you don't. Learning is the first step. Applying it to real life is walking through the open door.

Teachers (and others also to be honest) are trying to help you get a good future and understand many things, but you must go through the door and achieve it. No one can go through the door for you, just like know one can help if you choose to stay behind. Learning is a very important step in life, so teachers are teaching you and opening the door, and you must take in all the skills and continue on with life.
