Grammar Girl to the Rescue: Junior

In the United States, last Monday was a holiday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day. People often wonder whether they need to put a comma before the Jr. that follows someone's name.

The official holiday name has no comma, and the AP StylebookThe Chicago Manual of Style, and other style books recommend omitting the comma in Martin Luther King Jr. Day and any name that includes Jr.,Sr., III, and so on.
Grammar Girl's advice is to leave it out.

  1. Thanks Mrs. Clayton. I always wondered where to put a comma if you had the word Jr or Sr. It always helps when you post grammar stuff on your blog.

    1. I agree. This helped me so much with my commas. I will keep this in my mind! Grammar girl is really helpful. I wonder how she is so awesome with grammar. Sometimes I do exactly what grammar girl says not to, so (like Noemi sort of said) it helps me a lot and keep posting grammar girl's advice!

    2. I agree Noemi, it makes life easier to know that. Commas is the thing I always need to work on but getting grammar posts about commas helps me and probably a lot of other people. Thanks Ms.Clayton.
